If you have too many programs running in the background then this can drastically slow down your computer. A quick look at the icons beside your clock will give you a basic idea, although all running programs will not be listed here. To disable the entire group, do the following:

1) Click on "START" then "RUN"

2) Type "MSCONFIG" and click on "OK"

3) Click on "SELECTIVE STARTUP", now remove the tick from "LOAD STARTUP ITEMS" and click "OK" when you reboot the startup group will be disabled.

4) Test your computer, if all is OK then run “MSCONFIG”, click on “STARTUP” and enable your important programs, eg Virus Checker, Firewall, etc. (If you find it hard to locate these then look in the command section for paths relating to the make or manufacturer of your software.)

Please not that it is important to keep your virus checker and firewall enable, but if you find no difference by disabling the group just enable the entire startup group again.
